2016 Bass Pro Shop's Crappie Masters Angler Team of the Year

5 Time Crappie Masters Winning Father & Son Team

I have been fishing crappie tournaments with my father, Charlie Rogers, for 25 years. I have lived in Missouri my whole life and have four wonderful children and an amazing fiancee', Shawna.  I’m employed by United Excel Construction Company, where I serve as a Principal of the company, interacting daily with head executives of healthcare facilities. I enjoy all the aspects of tournament crappie fishing; my greatest joy is showing a new team the tournament ropes, and then watching that person be successful and fall in love with the sport of tournament fishing.

In 2010, I started a monthly tournament trail on Truman Lake, MO. The goal of these tournaments was to introduce anglers, who may have been intimidated by national tournaments in the past, to the world of tournament fishing. These tournaments are ongoing and have brought over thirty new teams to the sport of fishing. In 2015, I started mentoring high school students at the “High School” Crappie Masters events, sharing my boat and providing mentorship on the fishing industry, tournaments, and marketing with students from three different states.

My father and I have been traveling around, as a team, fishing tournaments for over 25 years now. I can still remember my first crappie tournament: I was eight years old – I think I got sick and threw up over the side of the boat – but that doesn’t count. In my late teens and early twenties, I was a huge bass guy – I even fished BASS as an amateur in the 90’s. My dad was solely into crappie fishing and kept asking if I would fish a crappie tournament with him. I did, and we got fourth place in the very first one we fished. We went on to place in the money in the next five we fished together, and I haven’t looked back since. I have now fished crappie tournaments in 14 different states. (Though, truth be told, I still enjoy bass fishing; my favorite TV show is Bassmasters on ESPN.)

To date, my father and I have won crappie tournaments in five different states and qualified for the Classic twenty times. Truman Lake is considered our home lake, where we have racked up twenty-two first-place finishes in our career. Currently we are fishing the Crappie Masters Tournament Trail, where we have also won five major tournaments, including the very first One Pole Ultimate Challenge and the Missouri State Championship. We also fish very small local tournaments, where supporting tournament crappie fishing is the main objective. We are averaging 15-18 tournaments a year. We finished fifth in angler of the year for both 2013 and 2014, eleventh in 2015, and took first this past season in 2016.
